It took a team of surgeons eight hours to remove the 12lbs tumour from her kidney, which had dwarfed her other organs.

Urologist Dr Ajit Sawant. who led the surgical team at a hospital in Mumbai, said: “She was no longer able to do her day-to-day activities because of the huge mass in her abdomen.

“In the past three years she had been referred to multiple hospitals, however because of the enormous size, the surgery was deferred.”

Dr Sawant said a CT scan revealed the large tumour.

The growth had completely engulfed the patient’s intestines and pancrease, to the left of her abdomen.

Dr Sawant said: “After thorough evaluation of her fitness to undergo major surgery, she was posted for radical right nephrectomy (removal of the right kidney).

“The enormity of the surgery can be understood by comparing the weight of the kidney tumour – 5.5kg with the weight of a normal kidney, which is 110 to 140g.”

The operation was carried out at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital at Sion in Mumbai.

The woman, from the Darbhanga district of Bihar state in North India, was released from hospital after a week.

The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed it was the largest renal tumour ever discovered.

Earlier this year it emerged an unnamed woman had surgery to remove a giant tumour growing in her abdomen, after it began crushing her organs.

The lump weighed 38.5lbs and was so big the woman in her 40s was unable to breathe under its weight.
