Saudi social media celebrity Afnan Al Batel has come under fire for “bragging” about her wealth on social media.
A now-viral hashtag launched on Twitter earlier this week is calling on people to block the star on social media platforms, accusing her of showing off her possessions.
Many are also attacking Al Batel for constantly posting adverts encouraging people to buy “overpriced” products.
The hashtag trended for hours on Wednesday and continues to make the rounds online.
It sparked a heated debate among users, many of whom deemed the behavior of rich and famous Arab social media influencers “destructive to youth” and “unacceptable.”
The influencer’s videos angered many…
“She’s showing off that she bought clothes for over a million riyals!!”
Who launched a Twitter campaign labelling Al Batel a “show off”
“One of Al Batel’s negative effects on society.”
And criticized her for negatively influencing followers
“Boys and girls complain about their realities and hate the lives they have because they’ve come to believe that life is all about luxurious outings, first-class travel, and brands.”
“There has to be a campaign that shows our sons and daughters what real life is all about”
“Life is nothing like the vain life these people lead and portray.”
Many criticized the ads posted by the star
“Anyone who wants to advertise something must do that with integrity, they should try the products they ask people to go buy.”
“I bet you that they’ve never tried any of the products they advertised”
Al Batel isn’t the only influencer who’s under fire…
Several other popular social media stars are now being targeted by the social media campaign.
Some raised this point
“You’re the ones who made them famous, you’re also the ones who can shut them down. It’s all up to you.”
Not everyone attacked Al Batel though…
“It’s her account and her daily life, she’s free to post anything she wants on there. People who are worried over their children viewing things like this should simply not download social media apps.”
Some tweeps defended her
قال تعالى ” إن المبذرين كانوا إخوان الشياطين ” تشتري ملابس بمليون ريال وماتلبسيها إلا لبسه أو لبستين ؟!
“It’s right that she is opulent but you have nothing to do with her. It’s her money and she’s free to spend it the way she wants to. It’s unacceptable to defame her this way.”
