Serena Williams Hails Andy Murray After Shutting Down Sexist Reporter

Andy Murray heroically shut down a sexist remark from a journalist at a press conference this week, winning praise from fans… including tennis ace Serena Williams.

At the press conference on Wednesday, following Murray’s defeat to American Sam Querry, he interrupted a journalist who appeared to ignore the achievements of female tennis players.

“Andy, Sam is the first American player to reach the semi-final of a Slam since 2009…” the reporter began, before Murray replied: “Male player.”

Williams alone has won 12 Grand Slams in that period. Her sister Venus, Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys – all American – have also reached Grand Slam semi-finals since 2009.

Serena announced back in April she will miss the remainder of the season as she prepares to give birth to her first child in autumn.

Speaking to ESPN, she said:

I don’t think there should be a woman player, and there shouldn’t be a female athlete, who isn’t completely supportive of Andy Murray.

He has spoken up for women’s issues and women’s rights, especially in tennis, for forever. And he does it again, you know!

That’s who he is and one thing we love about him.

Serena won Wimbledon last year, which was one of 12 major titles secured in the period – and Venus reached the semis on Tuesday.

But that wasn’t the first time Murray has called out sexism, during an interview after he won the men’s singles title at the Rio Olympics, John Inverdale said Murray was the ‘first person to win two tennis golds in the sport’.

But Murray was forced to remind him Venus and Serena had ‘won about four each’.

Well done, Andy!
